A24 To Bring Ben Wheatley’s FREE FIRE To Theaters

News broke over the weekend that should make anyone who loves challenging, engaging movies giddy. A24 Studios has picked up Ben Wheatley’s next film for distribution. The British director, who has already gifted the world the brilliant Kill List, Sightseers, A Field In England and the upcoming High Rise will see Free Fire brought to the public by the studio behind The Witch, Spring Breakers and the upcoming Green Room.

Wheatley wrote the film with his wife and script writing partner Amy Jump, and has assembled a stellar cast including Brie Larson, Cillian Murphy, Armie Hammer and Michael Smiley. According to Deadline, Free Fire concerns:

An arms deal that goes spectacularly and explosively wrong. Justine (Brie Larson) has brokered a meeting in a deserted warehouse between two Irishmen and a gang led by Vernon and Ord, who are selling them a stash of guns. But when shots are fired during the handover, complete pandemonium ensues, with everyone at the scene suddenly thrust into a heart-stopping game of survival.

The lack of the mid size drams aimed at adults has been lamented for a long time. We are seeing a commitment from A24 to bring diverse, auteur driven films to the market. The Witch was presented on over two thousand screens and Jeremy Saulnier’s followup to Blue Room, the soon to be released Green Room is also going wide. Now they’ve added Wheatley to an impress list of talent that are making intelligent, gorgeous movies that are dominating the conversation among cinephiles. While Free Fire doesn’t have a release date yet, A24 has committed to giving it a fair push and wide release.

Fee free to celebrate people.
