See the new BLAIR WITCH for free before it is released!

Blair Witch Final PosterI rarely hide my disdain for soulless Hollywood horror films. You know the type. The ones with cheap jumps scares, but no tension or actual terror built in to the film. The ones designed cheaply for a profitable opening weekends, only to be forgotten as soon as the projector cools.

Often horror franchise films fall in to this category. Though I’d love to dismiss these films and save myself the grief, there is something fascinating going on this fall in the world of horror: big horror sequels are getting directed by amazing directors. Mike Flanagan’s attachment to the OUIJA prequel has meant that I am suddenly interested in it! I found the first film personally insulting to horror fans, but Flanagan is one of the best working horror directors today.

Along those lines, we have BLAIR WITCH. The continuation of 1999’s pillar of found-footage frights, my expectations were admittedly low. But then, after a shroud of secrecy, we found out that BLAIR WITCH is being written and directed by the cinematic one-two punch of Simon Barrett and Adam Wingard. From THE GUEST to YOU’RE NEXT these two have been creating horror (or horror-adjacent) films that are big fan favorites.

The tension between my low expectations of contemporary horror franchises and my love for these upcoming indie directors has been driving me crazy. Thankfully, these films are coming out soon and all of my nagging questions will be answered. And you can join me!
